Synthetic Wigs FAQs

What is a Synthetic Wig?

A synthetic wig is a wig made from high-quality plastic materials such as Kanekalon or Toyokalon, designed to mimic the look and feel of natural hair. Unlike human hair wigs, synthetic wigs come pre-styled, so they hold their shape even after washing—making them a low-maintenance and affordable wig option.

Key Features of Synthetic Wigs:

• Pre-Styled Convenience – Always ready to wear with little to no styling needed. Just shake and go!
• Budget-Friendly – Synthetic wigs are more affordable than human hair wigs, making them a popular choice for first-time wig wearers and those that prefer the pre-styled convenience.
• Variety of Styles – Synthetic wigs are available in many colors, lengths, and textures, including heat-friendly synthetic wigs that allow limited heat styling.
• Lightweight & Comfortable – Synthetic wigs are made with breathable cap designs for all-day wear.

Wig Studio 1 offers a variety of synthetic wigs and heat friendly synthetic name brand wigs by Jon Renau, Raquel Welch, Noriko, Estetica and more.

Do Synthetic Wigs Look Natural?

Yes, synthetic wigs can look very natural, especially when made with high-quality synthetic fibers like Kanekalon or heat-friendly fibers. Modern synthetic lace front wigs and monofilament wigs are designed to mimic the look of natural hair growth, giving you a realistic hairline and scalp appearance.

Why Synthetic Wigs Look Natural:

• Pre-Styled Fibers – Hold their shape and style, keeping a polished look in all types of weather.
• Advanced Cap Constructions – Lace front wigs create a natural-looking hairline, while monofilament tops allow realistic parting.
• Wide Range of Colors – Available in natural shades, rooted blends, and highlighted tones that replicate salon color, synthetic wigs are offered in exceptionally beautiful tones.
• Lightweight and Comfortable – Designed to sit securely and naturally on the head.

While human hair wigs offer the most authentic feel and styling versatility, many premium synthetic wigs from brands like Jon Renau, Raquel Welch, Belle Tress, and Ellen Wille look so realistic that they are often mistaken for natural hair.

How Long Do Synthetic Wigs Last?

On average, a synthetic wig lasts 4–6 months with daily wear and proper care. Heat-friendly synthetic wigs may have a shorter lifespan due to styling, while higher-end fibers can last longer with proper care.

Heat friendly synthetic wigs require the use of heat on the ends to keep the fibers feeling soft, requiring more care and maintenance than a traditional synthetic wig.

Synthetic wigs are perfect for anyone looking for an affordable, ready-to-wear hairstyle solution with minimal upkeep.

Wig Studio 1 carries all of the most popular name brand wigs available, such as Jon Renau Wigs, Raquel Welch Wigs and more!

Can You Style a Synthetic Wig with Heat?

You can style a synthetic wig with heat ONLY if it is labeled as a heat-friendly synthetic wig. Heat-friendly fibers are designed to withstand heat styling tools like flat irons, curling irons, and blow dryers, usually up to 280°F (137°C). This allows you to straighten, curl, or add waves for versatile looks.

Important Tips for Styling Heat-Friendly Synthetic Wigs:
• Always check the manufacturer’s recommended temperature range.
• Use low to medium heat settings to prevent fiber damage.
• Allow the fibers to cool completely to lock in the style.
• Use heat-protectant products made for synthetic wigs.
⚠️ Regular synthetic wigs are not heat-safe and will melt or become permanently damaged if exposed to heat tools.

For the most natural results, look for heat-friendly lace front wigs or monofilament heat-friendly wigs from top brands like Raquel Welch, Ellen Wille, PUSH, Belle Tress, Amore and Rene of Paris.

What is the Difference Between a Synthetic Wig and a Human Hair Wig?

The key difference between a synthetic wig and a human hair wig is the type of fiber used and how the wig performs over time. Each option has unique benefits depending on your lifestyle, budget, and styling needs.

Human Hair Wigs
• Material: Made with 100% real human hair
• Look & Feel: Offers the most natural appearance and movement
• Styling: Can be curled, straightened and styled, just like your own hair
• Longevity: With proper care and maintenance, human hair wigs last 12-24 months
• Cost: Human hair wigs are more expensive, but they are a longer-term investment
• Best For: Those who want luxury wigs with styling versatility and durability

Synthetic Wigs
• Material: Made with high-quality synthetic fibers like Kanekalon
• Look & Feel: Pre-styled to hold shape—no daily styling required – Will not react to humidity like human hair will. Synthetic wigs retain their style even if you get caught in the rain.
• Styling: Synthetic wigs come pre-styled and generally cannot be exposed to heat styling tools, unless it is a heat friendly synthetic wig (HF)
• Longevity: Lasts 4–6 months with daily wear and proper care and maintenance
• Cost: More affordable compared to human hair wigs
• Best For: Those looking for affordable, ready-to-wear wigs with minimal upkeep

Both synthetic wigs and human hair wigs are excellent choices. The best option for you depends on whether you prioritize affordability and convenience (synthetic) or a more natural look and long-term value (human hair).

How Do I Wash my Synthetic Wig?

At Wig Studio 1, we recommend washing your alternative hair every 6-8 wears.

CLEANSE & CONDITION

  • Before washing your wig or hairpiece, gently remove any tangles using a wide tooth comb.
  • Wet hair completely using cool running water, allowing the water to run in the direction of the fibers.
  • Gently lather the hair with a small amount of wig shampoo specifically formulated for synthetic hair, making sure that the hair is traveling in the same direction.
  • Do not rub hair or soak your wig in a basin of water as this may cause tangling and potentially loosen the knotting of the hand tied fibers.
  • Rinse hair thoroughly under cool running water until water runs clear.
  • Wrap wig or hairpiece in a towel and gently pat dry.
  • Depending on products used, you may repeat the steps above with conditioner specifically formulated for synthetic hair.
  • If you prefer to use a leave in conditioner, spray 3-5 pumps of the leave-in-conditioner, keeping away from base of wig or hairpiece.
  • Gently detangle hair using your wide tooth comb.

DRY & STYLE

  • Allow wig or hairpiece to air dry naturally by placing on a plastic wig stand. Do not blow dry synthetic hair unless it is heat friendly synthetic (HF).
  • For mid-length to longer length styles, we recommend applying some HD Smooth Detangling Spray, (3-5 pumps) focusing on bottom half of wig or hairpiece.
  • Gently comb through using your wide tooth comb. Use your fingertips or wig brush/comb for your desired style.
  • To add texture and definition, use a small amount of styling creme or Pieced to Perfection texturizing spray.

Do not use heat to style synthetic fibers (curling irons, flat irons or blow dryers), as it will damage the hair fibers. However, you can use a low heat setting on a (HF) Heat Friendly Synthetic Wig.

TIPS

  • Be cautious when standing near a heat source (i.e. open oven, heater, dryer, etc.) Excessive heat can damage synthetic fibers.
  • We recommend using a Detangling Spray, along with a wide tooth comb to detangle your synthetic wig. This is especially important with a mid-length or long-length wig or hairpiece.
Can You Dye or Color a Synthetic Wig?

No, you generally cannot dye or color a synthetic wig. Unlike human hair wigs, which can usually be dyed and customized, synthetic wigs are made from fibers like Kanekalon or Toyokalon that do not absorb traditional hair dye. Attempting to use box dye or salon hair color on a synthetic wig will damage the fibers and ruin the wig.

Alternatives to Dyeing a Synthetic Wig:
• Purchase a wig in your desired color – Synthetic wigs come in a wide variety of natural shades, rooted blends, and fashion colors.
• Try a heat-friendly synthetic wig – These can be styled with heat but heat-friendly synthetic fibers still cannot be dyed.
• Use temporary wig-safe sprays or chalks – These allow you to add fun highlights or fashion tones without damaging the wig.

If you want full color customization, a 100% human hair wig (Remy or Virgin) is the best option since it can be dyed, highlighted, or toned just like natural hair.

Popular synthetic wig brands like Jon Renau Wigs and Raquel Welch Wigs offer a wide range of natural and trendy colors, eliminating the need for dyeing.
