For years, Jen struggled quietly with hair loss, trying everything she could to hide the thinning she saw in the mirror each day. Today, she speaks openly about her journey—not only to encourage others experiencing hair loss, but to remind women everywhere that confidence can be rediscovered in unexpected ways.
Jen is an entrepreneur who lives in the Midwest of Nebraska with her husband of 34 years, Ken. Together, they have four grown children, two grandchildren, and two beloved English Bulldogs who keep life lively and full of personality.
Her hair loss journey began during one of the most difficult seasons of her life. In 2021, Jen learned that her mother had pancreatic cancer. The two were extremely close, and the emotional weight of that experience deeply affected her. After her mother passed away later that year, Jen began noticing significant hair thinning.
Like many women experiencing hair loss, she initially tried to manage it privately. She combed her hair strategically to cover sparse areas, used hairspray to hold everything in place, and experimented with hair fibers, shampoos, vitamins, and various products promising thicker hair. Despite her efforts, nothing truly gave her the confidence or results she hoped for.
Two years later, Jen decided it was time to seek professional help. A dermatologist diagnosed her with female pattern hair loss, likely genetic, with stress potentially contributing as well. She began using minoxidil, which helped maintain some of her existing hair, but eventually she noticed continued thinning around her crown.
That became the turning point.

Discovering Wigs and Toppers
Determined to find a solution, Jen began researching wigs and toppers and exploring her options online. After learning more about alternative hair and finding styles that felt approachable, she purchased her very first topper—a moment she now describes as life-changing.
Receiving that topper brought an immediate sense of hope and relief. For the first time in a long while, she felt like she could finally stop focusing on what she was losing and start focusing on how she wanted to feel.
Soon after, Jen immersed herself in learning about wigs and toppers online. She found inspiration and education through YouTube creators, especially Taz from Taz’s Wig Closet, whose videos helped her gain the confidence to wear alternative hair openly and proudly.
One particular message resonated deeply with her: don’t be afraid to wear your wig in public.
That encouragement gave Jen the push she needed to fully embrace wigs—not as something to hide behind, but as a tool for confidence, creativity, and self-expression.
From Frustration to Freedom
Today, Jen owns about a dozen wigs in a variety of styles and lengths, though she still keeps her very first topper close to her heart. While toppers introduced her to the world of alternative hair, wigs quickly became her favorite because of their versatility and freedom.
Instead of spending every morning worrying about how to conceal thinning hair, Jen now enjoys choosing a look based on her mood, outfit, or the occasion. Wigs transformed her daily routine from frustrating to fun.
She especially loves beachy, wavy styles and gravitates toward pieces that feel playful, confident, and feminine. Raquel Welch's styles are among her favorites, particularly the sassy, textured looks that make her feel beautiful and empowered.
More importantly, wigs helped Jen regain something she thought she had lost: confidence.
The Power of Support
Throughout her journey, Jen has been surrounded by encouragement from family and friends. She credits her husband as being her biggest supporter and “rock star” through the entire process. His unwavering support helped make the transition into wig-wearing feel natural and empowering rather than intimidating.
Of course, there were still moments of nervousness. Jen remembers walking into one of her favorite local hangouts wearing a wig for the first time and feeling self-conscious initially. But that feeling quickly faded when she realized something important: this journey was about her own happiness, not anyone else’s opinions.
That mindset shift changed everything.

Advice for Others Experiencing Hair Loss
Looking back, Jen says the one thing she wishes she had known sooner was how much relief and happiness wigs would bring into her life. If she could go back, she would have started her wig journey much earlier.
Her advice to others currently struggling with hair loss is simple but heartfelt: don’t wait.
She encourages beginners to start with styles and colors similar to their biological hair if that feels more comfortable, then gradually branch out as confidence grows. She also reminds others to trust the process, take their time learning, and focus on finding pieces that make them feel good.
For Jen, wigs and toppers became much more than “helper hair.” They became emotional support, a creative outlet, and a path back to feeling like herself again.
Most importantly, they reminded her that confidence is still possible after hair loss.
And now, she hopes her story can help others believe the same for themselves.
