Living with Hair Loss from a Young Age

Barbara's hair loss journey began much earlier than most people would expect.

At just 10 years old, her parents noticed that her hair was becoming noticeably thinner. Concerned, they took her to the doctor hoping for answers. Unfortunately, the appointment provided little reassurance. The doctor looked at Barbara's nearly bald father, then looked at Barbara and concluded that her hair loss was hereditary. No tests were performed, and no further investigation was offered.

Hoping to help, Barbara's mother cut her hair short, believing it might grow back thicker. While the haircut did not change her hair density, it marked the beginning of years of insecurity about her appearance.

Throughout her teenage years and well into adulthood, Barbara became determined to make the most of the hair she had. She experimented with every styling technique she could think of—coloring, curling, crimping, and teasing—in an effort to create the appearance of fuller hair. Her thinning was most noticeable along the front and top of her scalp, and she spent years trying to disguise it.

For decades, this became her normal.

Taking the Leap into Alternative Hair

Everything changed in 2019.

While watching YouTube, Barbara came across a woman who openly shared that she wore a topper. Until that moment, Barbara had no idea the woman wore alternative hair. Seeing someone confidently discuss her experience was both surprising and inspiring.

Barbara decided to take the leap and purchased her first topper.

Although she loved the added coverage, she quickly realized she no longer had enough biological hair for the clips to stay securely in place. That meant reconsidering something she had always insisted she would never do.

"I always said I would never wear a wig—I would just shave my head one day," Barbara laughs.

With that mindset behind her, Barbara began researching wigs. Her first purchase was a Godiva's Secret wig. While it was beautifully made, she found the density much fuller than she was comfortable wearing. The search for something that felt more natural continued, and eventually she discovered Wig Studio 1 through Facebook.

Soon afterward, Barbara purchased her first Jon Renau wig.

That purchase became the beginning of a completely new chapter in her life.

Over the last six years, Barbara has learned that wearing wigs is a journey of discovery. She has found the features that suit her best: lower-density styles, hand-tied caps whenever possible, and soft, modern hairstyles that feel effortless to wear.

Today, her favorite brand is Belle Tress.

She appreciates the brand's natural-looking colors, contemporary styles, and lightweight feel. Her very first Belle Tress favorite was Caliente in Scrumptious Strawberry—a color she never would have imagined wearing.

"I had never been a redhead, but I received so many compliments!"

Her current favorite is Madison in Macadamia Latte Rooted. She loves its lower density, shorter length, and beachy waves, making it a perfect style for warmer weather.

Growing Confidence One Wig at a Time

One of Barbara's favorite aspects of wearing wigs is how simple they make her daily routine.

Instead of spending time styling thin hair every morning, she can put on her wig and head out the door with very little styling required. She also loves that she no longer needs to color her biological hair, allowing it to become healthier than it had been in years.

Beyond the convenience, wearing wigs has given Barbara something even more valuable—confidence.

Looking back, she wishes someone had told her that most people are not paying as much attention to your hair as you think they are.

"I wish I had known people really don't notice your hair that much. I would have started wearing wigs years earlier."

Today, she regularly receives compliments on her hair and is often asked who her hairstylist is. Sometimes she'll quietly share her secret.

"The reactions are priceless."

Barbara credits her husband for being incredibly supportive throughout her journey. Having someone encourage her at every step made a tremendous difference as she learned to embrace alternative hair.

She also encourages anyone beginning their own journey to find a supportive community. The Wig Studio 1 Facebook Support Group has been an invaluable source of encouragement, education, and inspiration. Seeing so many others navigating similar experiences reminded her that she was never alone.

Barbara's Advice for First-Time Wig Wearers

Barbara continues to learn through YouTube wig reviewers, educational videos, and online support groups. She believes there is always something new to discover about caring for and styling wigs.

For anyone purchasing their first wig, Barbara offers a few pieces of advice:

Focus on finding a style and density that feel natural to you before worrying too much about color. And don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone—you may discover a color you never imagined loving.

She also recommends investing in a few basic care products, including leave-in conditioning spray, a temperature-controlled flat iron for heat-friendly fibers when appropriate, and a sturdy wig stand. Most importantly, she encourages new wearers to watch educational YouTube videos to build confidence and learn practical tips before making their first purchase.

A Life Changed by Wigs

Today, Barbara says wigs have changed her life in ways she never expected.

She spends less time getting ready each morning, saves money by no longer coloring or regularly cutting her biological hair, and no longer worries that people are noticing her thinning scalp. Instead, she enjoys the freedom to change her hairstyle whenever she wants without making a permanent commitment.

For Barbara, wigs have become much more than a solution for hair loss—they have become a source of freedom, confidence, and self-expression.

She hopes others who are struggling with hair loss will not wait as long as she did.

"There is no reason to suffer when there are so many wonderful options available today. I think of wearing a wig as simply choosing an accessory for the day."

Her story is a reminder that sometimes the smallest change can have the greatest impact—and that confidence can begin with something as simple as finding the hair that helps you feel like yourself again.
