Synthetic wigs and hair toppers are made with a lightweight fiber that holds its style, color and curl pattern, even after washing. With simple care, a synthetic wig stays soft, shiny and natural-looking for months. This guide covers how to wash, dry, detangle and store a regular synthetic wig or topper. Synthetic Wig Care: Quick Answers
- How often should I wash a synthetic wig? About every 6 to 8 wears, or sooner in hot weather or if you use styling products.
- Can I use heat on a synthetic wig? No. Curling irons, flat irons and blow dryers can melt or frizz regular synthetic fiber. Only heat friendly synthetic and human hair wigs can be heat styled.
- What shampoo should I use? A shampoo and conditioner made for synthetic fiber. Regular shampoo can dry out and dull the fiber.
- How do I dry it? Let it air dry on a wig stand. Do not blow dry.
- How long does a synthetic wig last? With regular wear and good care, most synthetic wigs last about 4 to 6 months.
How to Wash a Synthetic Wig or Topper
- Gently remove tangles with a wide tooth comb, starting at the ends and working up.
- Hold the wig under cool running water, letting the water flow in the direction the hair falls.
- Gently lather a capful of shampoo made for synthetic hair through the fiber, keeping the hair moving in one direction. Do not rub or scrub, which causes tangling.
- Rinse thoroughly in cool water until the water runs clear.
- Wrap the wig in a towel and gently pat out the excess water. Do not wring or twist it.
- Mist the ends with a conditioning spray made for synthetic hair and gently detangle with a wide tooth comb, keeping the conditioner away from the cap.
How to Dry and Style a Synthetic Wig
- Place the wig on a plastic or wire wig stand and let it air dry completely. Do not blow dry.
- Make sure the cap is fully dry before wearing or storing the wig.
- Once dry, shake the wig out and style it with your fingertips or a wig brush or comb. The fiber will return to its original style.
- Do not use curling irons, flat irons or blow dryers unless the wig is specifically labeled heat friendly synthetic or human hair.
How to Prevent Tangling and Frizz
Synthetic fiber can tangle or frizz over time, especially at the nape and on mid-length and long styles, where hair rubs against collars, scarves and car seats. To keep it smooth:
- Detangle daily with a detangling spray and a wide tooth comb.
- Always comb from the ends upward, never from the root down.
- Reduce friction at the nape by avoiding rough collars and high-friction fabrics.
- Avoid brushing curly or wavy styles when dry; separate curls with your fingers instead.
Keep Your Synthetic Wig Away from Heat
Regular synthetic fiber is sensitive to heat. Be cautious near open ovens, grills, heaters, dishwashers and steam, and when lighting candles or fireplaces. A sudden blast of heat can frizz or melt the fiber in seconds, and the damage can't be reversed.
How to Store a Synthetic Wig
- Store your wig on a wig stand or in its original hairnet, away from direct sunlight and heat.
- Keep it out of humid bathrooms when not in use.
- For travel, place it inside a hairnet and pack it loosely in a box or bag so it doesn't get crushed.
When to Replace a Synthetic Wig
Signs it's time for a new wig include frizz at the ends that won't comb out, a dry or dull texture, thinning at the nape or a stretched cap. Rotating between two wigs helps each one last longer.

Synthetic Wig Care FAQ
Can I sleep or shower in a synthetic wig?
It's best not to. Sleeping in a wig causes friction and tangling, and shower heat and steam can damage the fiber. Remove your wig and place it on a stand overnight.
Why is my synthetic wig frizzy at the ends?
Frizz is usually caused by friction against clothing or by exposure to heat. Detangle daily, reduce friction at the nape and keep the wig away from heat sources. Regular synthetic frizz can't be smoothed with heat, so prevention is key.
Can I color or dye a synthetic wig?
No. Synthetic fiber does not absorb hair dye. If you'd like a new color, choose a new wig; our wig color charts can help you compare shades by brand.
What's the difference between synthetic and heat friendly synthetic wigs?

"I would really want to return it as defective! I saw it was thin and my fingers would go through the wefts at the base and see the label through the hair, but I thought the hair in the back would hopefully have better coverage. So I didn't return it right away, and I could not see the back of my head. Today I put the wig on the Styrofoam head, and was shocked to notice the white Styrofoam and the laced wefts through the wig's thin hair. What can the store do to remediate this, considering that this lack of quality really is unacceptable? I wrote an earlier review and incorrectly gave it 4 stars, before I could see how the wig looks from the back."

"""Salsa"" is my very first Raquel Welch wig and I purchased it in the color Glazed Sand. The color and style are beautiful; and I love the Memory Cap. My head size runs on the larger side of average, so I decided to purchase this in the large cap size. However, it's actually a bit too large on me--I was unaware until I already ordered it that Raquel Welch wigs tend to run a bit on the large side--that was my fault for not doing more research before buying. Though, once I moved the adjustable straps to the smallest I could go, the wig fit me much better. I do have to wear a wig grip band with it or else it will slip off my head. Salsa was also very affordable for me and I received my order quickly. It was beautifully and carefully packaged. The hair feels realistic and looks stunning in person My 4-star rating is not due to any flaw of the wig or with any issues with customer service, shipping, etc. As I stated previously, it's a beautiful wig, however, the style is just not ""me. "" It's too much hair for me, it's too ""fluffy"" if that makes sense. I have tried to work with it and the style just doesn't seem to ""go"" with my face no matter what I try; I look a bit too imbalanced. I do love the Glazed Sand color, though. I found that shade of blonde very flattering to my cool skin tone and it really brought out my green eyes, too. Just the shag hairstyle isn't quite cutting it--don't think the shag style is flattering to my face. Despite the fact that Salsa didn't quite hit the mark with me personally, I plan to purchase another Raquel Welch wig because I love the memory cap feature and she offers some beautiful wigs in some gorgeous colors. This time, though I know to go with the Average size cap. I also know there is another style of wig in her line that will be the perfect one for me, I will keep looking!"

"I got the Salsa Wig by Raquel Welch | Large Cap - R14/88H Golden Wheat, and I like the color and the feel of the hair. I agree 100% with the reviewer Sandra: the wig runs a bit large, I had to adjust the tabs and still doesn't feel secure. I can style it in a way that fits me, and I like the color, and even though not used to this style yet, I am OK with it. On a negative side, the wig is very fluffy and even though it seems to have a lot of hair, I can see the labels and my fingers through it. So, even it has longer, fluffier hair, the two tags an my fingers can be seen through. . . . This is my first Raquel Welch, so I will try the average size next time, and in a different style, still looking for just the right style that fits me. Now, how do I post a picture?"
