How It All Started: My Wig Journey

Ten years ago, I picked up a couple of wigs to switch up my hairstyle without committing to a color or cut. I was focused on going "organic" and decided to stop coloring my hair, so wigs seemed like a playful option to satisfy my curiosity. Little did I know, they would end up becoming more than just a novelty!

The Turning Point

Fast forward a decade, and life took a different turn when I had my beautiful daughter. With her birth, I also experienced significant hair loss—those lush, thick pregnancy locks quickly became a thing of the past. My naturally wavy hair grew curly, which helped mask the thinning for a while. But as the hair loss continued, it became impossible to ignore, especially around my temples and hairline. Scarves and updos became my go-to styles, but I was often discouraged about my appearance.

Then, a thought came to me: what if I brought out those wigs I'd tucked away? I started experimenting, and soon enough, my wig journey officially began.

Discovering the Wig World

I knew plenty of women who wore wigs and other hair pieces as part of their daily lives. We didn’t really talk about it, but I often found myself complimenting one friend in particular on her new styles. I’d say, “Oooo, I love your hair!”—without a thought to ask if it was a wig.

But when I started considering wigs for myself, my perspective shifted. Suddenly, it felt unnatural, and I began to worry about how others would perceive or accept me. Fortunately, I noticed that people were becoming more open about wearing wigs, extensions, and other hair alternatives. What once felt taboo was now more socially accepted—and even celebrated. And so, my wig journey truly began.

Watching YouTube wig reviews introduced me to a whole new level of what was possible. Seeing reviewers transform themselves with beautiful wigs got me thinking, "Why can’t I have that kind of hair?" At first, I looked for wigs that felt like "me"—medium brown, simple styles that looked natural enough to blend in with my everyday look. I had no idea how many options were out there: different brands, styles, colors—who knew there was so much variety?

One thing I wish I’d learned sooner is the importance of fit. I put off measuring my head, and that delay cost me in both money and comfort. There’s nothing like a wig that fits just right, straight out of the box.

Embracing the Wig Life

Initially, I felt a bit self-conscious, wondering if I should "confess" to wearing a wig. Friends and family had different reactions, but mostly positive ones. Some would say, “Wow, I love your hair!”—and it was a confidence boost when even my mom couldn’t tell I was wearing a wig! Once she thought a wig I was wearing was my natural hair and was astounded when she found out otherwise.

In time, I came to see wigs as just another accessory, an extension of my personality. Most people in my circle know by now that I wear wigs, and those who might not understand it? Well, my journey isn’t about them. This realization was incredibly liberating and gave me a new sense of confidence.

Tips for New Wig Wearers

If you’re starting your own wig journey, here’s my advice:
  1. Do Your Research: Watch YouTube reviews, look at different styles, and find colors that appeal to you. Some places, like WigStudio1, even offer free consultations.
  2. Know What You Want: Decide what you want from your wig. Do you prefer a natural-looking part and hairline? Do you need a fuss-free style that you can just pop on? Narrowing down these details can help guide your choices.
  3. Fit is Key: Measure your head circumference early on. For example, I have a petite head just shy of 21 inches, so brands that cater to smaller sizes are my go-to.
  4. Experiment with Styling: Wigs might need a little love to look their best on you. Shake them out, comb them, and let the fibers settle in. Sometimes, like with a new haircut, it takes a few tries to make it your own.
  5. Consider Longevity and Maintenance: While I love long styles, they may require more care. Shorter wigs tend to be more low-maintenance in my opinion.
  6. Join a Community: Online groups can be an incredible resource to see real people in real wigs. It’s one thing to see a stock photo and another to see how it truly looks on someone similar to you.
Wigs have given me the freedom to embrace my style in ways I never would have imagined. I have styles from short to long, curly to straight, and even a few fun colors. I love that they’re pre-styled and easy to put on when I want to feel put-together. Wigs have truly become a part of my wardrobe—and my confidence in front of the camera has returned!
