How to Read Wig Color Codes

Most brands use numbers from dark to light: 1 is black, 2 to 6 are dark browns, 8 to 12 are light browns, 14 to 24 are blondes, 27 to 33 are reds and 613 is the lightest blonde. Grey blends usually fall between 34 and 60, where 60 is white. Letters describe how the color is finished: R, S, SS or RT usually mean rooted, H means highlighted, T means tipped and F means frosted. A slash, as in 14/24, means two shades are blended. Some brands, like Ellen Wille and Mane Attraction, use color names instead of numbers. Each brand chart includes a legend for that brand's codes.

Wig Color Chart FAQ

Are wig color codes the same across brands?

No. Many brands use similar numbering, where low numbers are dark and higher numbers are lighter, but each brand blends its colors differently. A 6 or a 14/24 from one brand can look different from another brand's. Always compare colors on the chart for the brand you are buying.

What does rooted mean on a wig color chart?

Rooted colors have a darker shade at the root that blends into the lengths, like naturally grown-out color. Brands label rooted colors in different ways, such as R, S, SS, RT, GR or the word Rooted, and each brand chart's legend explains its codes.

Which brands have grey wig colors?

Most brands offer greys, from salt and pepper to silver and white. Henry Margu, WigPro and HIM by HairUWear list grey colors by percentage, while brands like Jon Renau, Raquel Welch, Gabor, Rene of Paris and TressAllure offer named and rooted greys. Open any brand chart to see its grey section.

Can I see colors for human hair wigs and toppers?

Yes. Charts for brands with human hair, such as Jon Renau, Raquel Welch, Estetica, Amore, PUSH and WigPro, show human hair colors separately, because the same color code can look different in human hair and synthetic fiber. The easiHair chart covers Jon Renau hair toppers and clip-ins.

How do I choose the right wig color?

Start with your skin's undertone: warm, golden and copper shades tend to flatter warm undertones, while ash, beige and icy shades suit cool undertones. Rooted colors look especially natural at the part. Read How Do I Choose the Right Color? or book a free virtual consultation for personal help.
